NHL RULES CHANGES,
2005-2006 SEASON

Here are the NHL rules changes for 2005-2006:

Shootouts
Games that are tied after 60 minutes of regulation and five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime will go to a three-player shootout. Each team takes three shots and the team with the most goals after those six shots is the winner. If the score remains tied, the shootout will proceed to a "sudden death" format.

Two-line passes
Passes from behind the defensive blue-line to the attacking blue-line are now legal. The centre red-line will be ignored for purposes of the two-line pass, but will still be used to make icing calls.

Reduction of goalie equipment
The dimensions of goaltender equipment will be reduced by approximately 11 per cent. In addition to reducing the width of pads to 11 inches, the blocking glove, upper-body protector, pants and jersey also will be reduced in size.

Tag-up offsides
Under this rule, play will continue if offensive players who preceded the puck into the zone return to the blue-line and "tag up".

Nets moved back
The goal lines will now be only 11 feet from the end boards, two feet closer than before to encourage more play in front of the net.

Limited puck-handling by goaltenders
Goaltenders will be restricted as to where they can play the puck behind the goal line. Goaltenders can only handle the puck in a trapezoid-shaped area defined by lines that begin six feet from either goal post and extend diagonally to points 28 feet apart at the endboards.

These changes appear to be good news for handicappers. The new rules will result in higher scores and fewer ties. We expect to have our best NHL season ever.   - J. R. Miller
